Busy ARCA Weekend in Talladega, Kern County; Sanchez, Lewis Earn Victories
Last weekend was one of just a handful of dual-event weekends for the ARCA Menards Series in 2022, with the national division heading to Talladega Superspeedway for the General Tire 200 and the West Series taking on Kern County Raceway Park for the Salute to the Oil Industry NAPA Auto Parts 150. In Talladega, Nick Sanchez would make a quick recovery after falling out of the lead pack, pushing past Corey Heim and Bret Holmes as a Daniel Dye spin led to a race-ending caution. The race was shortened after an extended red flag for a major incident earlier in the race, which saw Scott Melton suffer a broken leg.
In Kern County, meanwhile, 16-year-old Landen Lewis would win his first-ever West Series start after holding off points leader Jake Drew on the final restart. Lewis would push forward from third on the grid, leading the final 65 laps of the race. Cole Moore, Tanner Reif, and General Tire Pole Award winner Paul Pedroncelli Jr. would complete the top five.
General Tire 125 Returns to Dover Motor Speedway
The third race of the 2022 ARCA Menards Series East season sees drivers head to Dover Motor Speedway for Friday’s General Tire 125, with a slate of championship contenders ready to go for maximum points at the Monster Mile. Kyle Busch Motorsports driver Sammy Smith will attempt to make it three wins in a row to start the season and extend his points lead over David Gilliland Racing’s Taylor Gray and Young’s Motorsports driver Leland Honeyman, while Rajah Caruth and Jesse Love will add some extra muscle to the entry list.
Dover’s presence on the ARCA East calendar dates all the way back to its days as the Busch North Series, but future NASCAR Cup Series talent has always found its way to the front of the field. Active Cup drivers with wins in Dover events here include Bubba Wallace, Corey LaJoie, and Harrison Burton, while NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin, two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip, and former IROC champion Harry Gant are also on the list of past winners. Last year, Ty Gibbs took the checkered flag as the race returned to the spring for the first time since 1992.
