RYAN PREECE DOMINATES GENERAL TIRE 200 AT SONOMA
The General Tire 200 at Sonoma Raceway often boasts some of the most talented entry lists of the year for the ARCA Menards Series West, as drivers from NASCAR’s three national tours dip into the series for extra seat time before running their primary beats later in the weekend. Such was the case this year in particular as the NASCAR Xfinity Series added Sonoma to its calendar for the first time, but in the end, it was NASCAR Cup Series regular Ryan Preece who came out on top at race’s end.
The Stewart-Haas Racing Cup driver is no stranger to the West Series at Sonoma, having lost this race on a jump start call in 2019 prior to the series’ merger into the ARCA platform. Preece earned his revenge on that race by dominating the early stages, making the perfect strategy call on when to pit for fuel, getting back into the lead after a caution flew, and never looking back. He came home more than nine seconds ahead of Sammy Smith, while fellow SHR driver Riley Herbst, Jack Wood, and William Sawalich rounded out the top five.
RACE PREVIEW: BERLIN
The ARCA Menards Series West gets back to short track racing on Saturday with a trip to Michigan and the 7/16-mile Berlin Raceway, a staple of the schedule for the better part of the past 20 years. The sixth round of the 2023 campaign will air live at 8PM ET on FS1, with streaming available on the FloRacing app.
The shape of this year’s ARCA championship battle will be altered with the absence of Greg Van Alst, who was the victim of a wreck in the General Tire 150 at Charlotte that set his program back substantially. Van Alst, the Daytona winner, fell to seventh in the standings after the DNF. Venturini Motorsports driver Jesse Love now has control of the title chase, holding a 13-point advantage over Frankie Muniz of Rette Jones Racing and 29 points on Rev Racing’s Jack Wood, who is also not on the Berlin entry list.
