The ARCA Menards Series West has just two road course races on its 2024 schedule, but they appear on back-to-back weeks on the calendar. The first took place last Friday, as rising talent William Sawalich of Joe Gibbs Racing grabbed the checkered flag at Portland International Raceway in the Portland 112.
As frequently as Sawalich has visited the winner’s circle in ARCA ovals, the win marked his first on a road course on the platform. It came when he forced his way past NASCAR Xfinity Series star and former JGR driver Brandon Jones with an aggressive move in the Turn 1 chicane. Jones, who had qualified on pole, settled for second, while Isabella Robusto, Tyler Reif, and Gio Ruggiero completed the top five. Marco Andretti recovered from early-race struggles to finish seventh, while 15 of the 24 drivers to start the race finished on the lead lap.
The West division remains in the spotlight this weekend for Friday’s General Tire 200 at Sonoma Raceway, the second of those road course events. Sonoma regularly attracts some of the most star power on the entire schedule, and this year is no exception; joining Andretti and Jones this week are NASCAR Cup Series driver Noah Gragson and 2023 Xfinity Series Championship 4 driver Sam Mayer. As for the full-timers, Reif will look to extend his 10-point championship lead over Sean Hingorani, who finished off the lead lap in Portland. Hingorani has just one point in hand on third place Trevor Huddleston and six on fourth place Jack Wood.
