Last Week: Tanner Reif Earns First ARCA West Pole, Win at Irwindale
Over the years, Bob Bruncati’s Sunrise Ford Racing team has fielded some of the top upcoming talents in stock car racing on the west coast. On Saturday night, 16-year-old Tanner Reif established himself as the latest name on that list, ending a winless drought for the team that dated back to 2020 and earning his first ARCA Menards Series West victory in the NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame at Irwindale Speedway.
Reif kicked off the night by earning his first General Tire Pole Award and never gave up the point, leading every lap even as an overtime restart bunched up the field. Cole Moore also scored a career-best finish in second, taking advantage of contact between Jake Drew and Trevor Huddleston to jump up from fourth. Drew settled into fourth and Huddleston came home sixth after the contact, but Drew remains the points leader by three over teammate Reif.
Championship Battles Begin to Take Shape Across ARCA Divisions
The ARCA Menards Series is off until April 23, when both the national and West divisions return to action at Talladega Superspeedway and Kern County Raceway Park, respectively. The East Series won’t return until April 29 at Dover Motor Speedway. But the anticipation for each series’ return is heightened by interesting championship battles at hand in all three divisions.
GMS Racing’s Daniel Dye leads the national standings by 11 points over Rajah Caruth by virtue of two top-five finishes in the first two races, while back-to-back East Series wins have given Sammy Smith a 12-point advantage over Taylor Gray and 13 over Leland Honeyman, even as all three have scored top fives in both of their races thus far. Jake Drew’s advantage in the West Series is the smallest of all, and he’s got the most pressure behind him; not only is teammate Tanner Reif three points back, he’s also got the Bill McAnally-backed pair of Cole Moore (-4) and Austin Herzog (-8) nipping at his heels. All three series are early enough in the season for one bad race to completely flip the standings on their head, though, so stay tuned!
