Last Year’s Winners: Eli Tomac (450), Jett Lawrence (250)

A1 is known by the first letter and number alone for countless reasons. But Saturday’s start of the second SuperMotocross campaign, as well as the 2024 Supercross season, at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium comes with a historic note attached this time around: it’ll be the first time that Eli Tomac and Jett Lawrence have ever gone head-to-head. Tomac is back after healing the torn Achilles that put a heartbreaking early end to his 450SX title chase last spring, an injury that didn’t just open the door for Chase Sexton to take the title, but also for Lawrence to absolutely dominate the Pro Motocross campaign and later become the first SMX 450 champion.

Lawrence’s domination, alongside the promotion of his brother Hunter, made Sexton expendable for Honda. He made the move to join Aaron Plessinger at Red Bull KTM, paving the way for Cooper Webb to return to Monster Energy Star Yamaha as a teammate to Tomac and Justin Cooper and sending Dylan Ferrandis off to the privateer Phoenix Racing Honda squad. But many other teams, like Monster Energy Kawasaki with Adam Cianciarulo and Jason Anderson, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Malcolm Stewart and Christian Craig, and Ken Roczen leading HEP Motorsports Suzuki, will run it back in 2024.

In 250SX, we won’t see defending SuperMotocross champion Haiden Deegan just yet (he’ll be running the East calendar), but there’s still plenty of talent to be had among Monster Energy Star Yamaha’s Jordon Smith and Nate Thrasher, Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki newcomers Levi Kitchen and Maximus Vohland, and Jo Shimoda, who replaces Hunter Lawrence on Team Honda HRC’s 250. The start of the season also means a shallow injury list across the board, with Colt Nichols and rookie Ty Masterpool the biggest names on 450 who won’t be at the gate in Anaheim.
