Last Race: It was the feel-good story of the year in Supercross: after unceremoniously parting ways with Honda in the offseason, Ken Roczen’s return to underdeveloped Suzuki machinery, the only bike in the 450SX field still using a kickstarter, yielded a surprise win at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Roczen, who swept all three races in Indy in 2021, held off charges from his former teammate Chase Sexton and Justin Barcia to give Suzuki its first win since he still rode for the brand in 2016. In 250SX East, Hunter Lawrence extended his points lead with a win of his own.
Race Preview: When it comes to the 450SX title chase, don’t get too distracted by “Kickstart Kenny” getting back on top of the box in Indy. Because as great of a moment as that was, last weekend also allowed third place finisher Cooper Webb to snatch the points lead from Eli Tomac by a single marker heading into tonight’s action in Detroit. Webb and Tomac have put a bit of a cushion on the more mistake-prone Sexton in third, setting up a terrific duel for the title. Meanwhile, Roczen is now just two points behind Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson for fourth.
Lawrence, meanwhile, has a comfortable 22-point lead over Honda teammate Max Anstie in 250SX East, while a quartet of Yamaha riders—factory riders Nate Thrasher, Jordon Smith, and Haiden Deegan, and Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX’s Jeremy Martin—are separated by just three points in the battle for third, and within striking distance of Anstie. The biggest question is if any of the factory Yamaha racers can assert themselves over the others to go after Anstie; at this point, Lawrence may be a bit too far ahead.
