Last Year’s Winners: N/A
Last Race: Supercross’ return to Angel Stadium of Anaheim saw racers take on their first Triple Crown of the year. Two wins in the 450SX class gave the overall top honors to Honda’s Chase Sexton, while second moto winner Jason Anderson (Kawasaki) and Ken Roczen (Suzuki) made it three brands on the podium. In 250SX West, Levi Kitchen’s young career saw its first-ever victory, as his 4-2-2 was just strong enough to nip points leader Jett Lawrence and his Honda. Kitchen was joined by Yamaha teammate Stilez Robertson on the podium.
Race Preview: Last week’s preview was all about Eli Tomac and Lawrence being the dominant forces in the 450 and 250 West divisions, respectively. So much for that. A slam for Tomac in the third moto derailed what had started out as a solid night, leaving him sixth overall with a 3-2-13. He’s still got a four-point lead on Sexton and Cooper Webb, but the door is definitely open in a way it didn’t seem to be in the first two rounds.
Lawrence still is a class ahead of the 250 West field with a 75-59 advantage over Cameron McAdoo, but this weekend the East riders will get their first chance to shine. The biggest story of the weekend in that class is the Supercross debut of Haiden “Danger Boy” Deegan, son of two-wheel legend Brian Deegan, who will join 250 veterans like Michael Mosiman, Jeremy Martin, and Jordon Smith when the gate drops. Either way, things should be wide open in the return to Houston, which hosted three events to open the 2021 season but was off the calendar last year.
