TYLER ANKRUM WINS DRAMATIC MID-OHIO RACE AFTER SPIN
Despite an off-track excursion from the lead with less than 20 laps to go, Tyler Ankrum’s return to the ARCA Menards Series at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was a victorious one. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular spent the next 13 laps fighting his way back into the top 10 before passing fellow Truck full-timer Dean Thompson for the win in the Zinsser SmartCoat 150. It was the 2018 East Series champion’s first win on the national tour in his second start.
William Sawalich and Jack Wood, two ARCA regulars who also ran the Truck race with Ankrum, finished second and third, respectively. Thompson, meanwhile, took contact from his Venturini Motorsports teammate Sean Hingorani on the last lap of the race and was relegated to 10th; Hingorani had been lapped after a previous incident and retaliated on Thompson. Meanwhile, Frankie Muniz retained second place to Jesse Love in the standings with a sixth place finish, a triumphant return to Mid-Ohio after an accident in formula cars there put a stop on his racing career 14 years earlier.
RACE PREVIEW: IOWA
It’s a combination race for the ARCA Menards Series and East Series this weekend at Iowa Speedway, with the .875-mile short track awaiting the drivers for Saturday’s Calypso 150. The ninth round of the 2023 campaign for the national series and fifth round for the East division will air live at 8PM ET on FS2, with streaming available on the FloRacing app.
The combination event will bring front-runners from both divisions to do battle head to head, with national points leader Jesse Love looking for his fifth win of the season for Venturini Motorsports and William Sawalich going for his third win in East (and second in a national division race) for Joe Gibbs Racing. Hingorani has been suspended for the event after Mid-Ohio and will not be competing.
