Last Week: Sammy Smith Scores Checkered Flag at Five Flags

David Gilliland Racing’s Tanner Gray jumped a restart with under 20 laps to go to end his hopes of two race wins in two weeks, and Kyle Busch Motorsports’ Sammy Smith capitalized with his second straight ARCA Menards Series East win in the Pensacola 200 at Five Flags Speedway. Working his way up from a fourth place starting spot, Smith took the lead from Gray on Lap 87 and held it for almost the entire race from there.

Leland Honeyman, who put his Young’s Motorsports car on the pole in just his second series start, finished second, while Gray worked his way back to third place in the final 11 laps after being sent to the end of the field for the last restart. The rest of the top five saw Daniel Escoto score fourth in his first-ever ARCA start and Willie Mullins place fifth in his first appearance at Five Flags.

This Week: West Series Heads to Irwindale

The second round of the ARCA Menards Series West season heads to Irwindale Speedway for the NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame. Practice and qualifying kick off at 2PM PT, with the green flag flying at 7PM PT for 150 laps on the half-mile California bullring.

The West season opened two weeks ago with the General Tire 150 at Phoenix Raceway, a combination event for the national and West divisions, with David Gilliland Racing’s Taylor Gray taking an emotional checkered flag just days after a hauler accident on the way to the track that killed crew member Steven Stotts and injured John Zaverl and Michael Mizzelle. Jake Drew was the highest-finishing West regular in that race in fifth place, and will lead the 18-car entry list into the event.
