Last Year’s Winners: Eli Tomac (450SX), Christian Craig (250SX)

Last Race: As long as Monster Energy Supercross is in the western half of its 2023 schedule, it seems like fans should get used to the combination of Eli Tomac atop the box in 450 and Jett Lawrence leading the 250 West field. That’s what happened in the inaugural event from Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, with Lawrence dominating an entire event once again and Tomac making it happen over some stiff competition. Fellow former 450 champion Cooper Webb and Justin Barcia would complete the podium.

Race Preview: What retirement? Tomac is two for two to start the year in 450, with his latest win in San Diego allowing him to snap a tie with Chad Reed with his 46th career indoor win. Now, Tomac sets his sights on Ricky Carmichael’s tally of 48, and few seem equipped to stop him—outside of maybe Webb, whose pace has been almost as strong. Rumors of Ken Roczen’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, as his return to Suzuki has produced back-to-back top fives, while Malcolm Stewart went down for the second week in a row in San Diego despite showing winning potential.

Lawrence, RJ Hampshire, and Cameron McAdoo have been the 250 West podium for each of the first two rounds of the year, but the closer battle has been between Hampshire and McAdoo by far. As we anticipate Lawrence’s move up to a 450, he’s doing exactly what everyone has expected of him in his long-awaited return to the West division. Could a perfect season be in the cards?
